Turning Study into Real-World Experience

Clinical placement is one of the most important stages in a student’s development. At ProMED Tasmania, we aim to ensure that placements go beyond observation and provide genuine learning opportunities.

APC students placed with ProMED are integrated into our operational teams and work alongside experienced clinicians, paramedics, and event medical professionals. Under close supervision, students are supported to:

  • Conduct patient assessments
  • Assist with clinical care and documentation
  • Develop communication and teamwork skills
  • Learn event operations and safety management
  • Build confidence in dynamic, high-pressure environments

This hands-on exposure allows students to apply classroom learning in real situations, strengthening their clinical reasoning and professional judgement.

Diverse Events, Diverse Learning

One of the key strengths of our partnership with APC is the variety of placements available to students. ProMED Tasmania provides medical coverage at some of the state’s largest and most complex events, including major festivals, sporting events, and community activities.

Through these placements, students gain experience in:

  • Managing minor and acute injuries
  • Supporting patients with medical conditions
  • Working in high-crowd and remote environments
  • Responding to environmental challenges such as heat and weather
  • Collaborating within multidisciplinary teams

This diversity ensures students graduate with a broad skill set and an understanding of how emergency healthcare operates in different contexts.

Spotlight on Our Students: Emily and Tessa

Among the many APC students who have completed placements with ProMED, Emily and Tessa are outstanding examples of the dedication and professionalism we see across our student cohort.

Both have consistently demonstrated strong clinical aptitude, a willingness to learn, and a positive approach to every placement. From long shifts at major festivals to early starts at community events, they have embraced every opportunity to develop their skills and contribute to the team.

Working closely with senior clinicians, Emily and Tessa have built confidence in patient assessment, communication, and teamwork, showing exactly what is possible when students are supported in a real clinical environment.

Learning Alongside Experienced Clinicians

A defining feature of ProMED Tasmania placements is the mentorship students receive. Our clinicians are passionate about teaching and take an active role in supporting student development.

Throughout placement, students are encouraged to:

  • Ask questions
  • Reflect on clinical encounters
  • Receive constructive feedback
  • Develop professional standards and ethics
    • Understand organisational policies and clinical governance

This mentorship model helps bridge the gap between study and practice, ensuring students feel supported as they transition into the workforce.

Pathways to Ongoing Employment

For many students, clinical placement with ProMED Tasmania is more than a learning experience. It is often the first step in a professional career within our organisation.

Students who demonstrate strong clinical skills, reliability, and alignment with our values are frequently offered opportunities for ongoing employment following graduation. This may include:

  • Event medical roles
  • Casual or part-time medic positions
  • Progression into advanced clinical pathways
  • Support for further study in paramedicine or healthcare

By investing in students early, we are able to build a skilled, committed workforce that understands our systems, culture, and standards of care.
